Darlinghurst

The owners of this 1860s Terrace were passionate about restoring the existing property with a strong focus on original construction philosophy and detailing. The brief called for the restoration and revitalization of the front part of the house capturing the living & dining spaces at ground floor, the hero stair case, and sleeping and bathing areas at first floor. Many of the original details of the house required partial or complete removal due to damage and lack of structural integrity, however we were careful to document the original features and details in order to replicate via custom material sizings and profiles, trims and decorative details. We have complimented period detailing in the architecture with selective contemporary accents to revive door and window hardware and lighting throughout - also provisioning for improved functionality. Other modern practicalities such as sun protection and improved natural ventilation and thermal properties have been cleverly integrated within the framework of period detailing to minimize any visual impact on the architecture and interiors. We worked closely with Sydney based builders ACAC to workshop and prototype many key details (often requiring bespoke master craftsmanship) to ensure a highly crafted and harmonious outcome that reactivates this residence while respecting the heritage architecture.
